For Grace, returning to education to pursue an HLA Foundation Degree in Hospitality, Tourism and Events has opened so many doors, both professionally and personally.

With the encouragement of her current employers, Beechlawn Hotel, Grace has been able to progress within her career – celebrating her promotion to supervisor, gain industry experience within the events sector, and provide for her young children.

Read more about Grace’s apprenticeship journey below.

What apprenticeship are you currently studying?

"I am studying an HLA Foundation Degree in Hospitality, Tourism and Events Management. I am in my first year at Belfast Metropolitan College and I'm currently employed by the Beechlawn Hotel in Dunmurry where I undertake the role of Restaurant Supervisor."

What made you want to study an apprenticeship?

"After the loss of my mum, I was really struggling with life in general and knew I needed something to regenerate and motivate myself. I had moved roles in work and realised how much I loved learning the new procedures within that department and thought I would return to education to encourage that love of learning."

How has Belfast Met helped on your apprenticeship journey?

"As a single mum of four children, going back to school full-time was not an option. Thankfully Belfast Met offer part-time apprenticeships where you can learn and work at the same time. This allows me to provide and progress.

"My course lecturer Siobhan has been a great support and a massive influence, making sure that I had all the qualifications I needed to get into my degree. Siobhan worked very closely with me last year to ensure I achieved all the necessary results I needed. I started off wanting to be manager to wanting to teach Hospitality in the future.

"I want to be able to help people achieve their academic dreams and goals the way Siobhan has done for me. Tuesday is my day at college, and it is one my favourite days of the week."

How has your employer helped you on your apprenticeship journey?

"My employer and colleagues are the main reason I returned to education. I had spoken to my General Manager, Tim along with other colleagues, and they were all so encouraging. They had seen I had been struggling and knew this would be something I could benefit from. They all really pushed me to return.

"I was apprehensive about returning to college because I had been out of education for such a long time and really struggled when I was at school. The thought of going back made me anxious but with the encouragement of my colleagues and management, I was eager to enrol.

"They are all so supportive. I am forever asking questions to help with various assignments, and the team are all so understanding and kind. My managers and fellow supervisors are more than happy to answer any questions I have. The Wedding Coordinators help me with any events questions I may have also. I have a great team and a great support system.

"I am so glad I listened to their advice; it was the best decision I ever made. They haven’t just helped academically or professionally but they have helped when I have struggled emotionally and mentally. It’s very important to have a supportive employer."

What has been your biggest achievement to date regarding your apprenticeship?

"My biggest achievement would definitely be my progression from waitress to supervisor. My experience in hospitality contributed to that progression. However, my supervisor, leadership diploma and continuation onto my degree was definitely the catalyst that helped with that move.

"I will have no doubt my degree will open more doors for me throughout my career in Hospitality. Another achievement would be being part of the Tourism NI ‘Make it Here’. Being able to help motivate people to join the hospitality industry with my own story was great."

What do you believe are the advantages to undertaking an apprenticeship?

"The main one for me being a single parent is being able to learn and work simultaneously. I will be able to do my degree and still work and provide for my children."

What advice would you give people who are considering an apprenticeship at Belfast Met?

"Do it! Make the leap. For any mums or women that are apprehensive or unsure, just enquire. It was the best decision I have ever made!"
