Life in Northern Ireland

Northern Ireland's economy is thriving with new industries being created and cities being revitalised with millions being invested in regeneration. There is a new cultural vitality, pride and optimism. Instead of emigrating, our brightest graduates are staying. Tourism is thriving too, with our moderate climate and world famous hospitality, scenery and quality of life - it's a great place to live.

Today the people of Northern Ireland are confidently looking forward to building a new future together. We are casting off the old troubled image and are proud to show off a fresh new face to the world. The place is full of youthful, optimistic energy and you will soon relish the good-humoured 'craic' and cosmopolitan lifestyle for which Belfast is renowned.

Belfast, as the capital city, is the political, commercial and educational hub of Northern Ireland. It has a population of 300,000 people and is fast becoming a mutli-cultural city. Employment opportunities abound, particularly in new industries such as health and environmental technologies, information and communication technologies and the growing business, services, hospitality and tourism sectors.

Belfast is one of the most exciting cities in Europe and was recently voted "Europe's friendliest - and trendiest - regional capital". In the last few years it has undergone a dramatic transformation adding a range of attractions to the city. Times have changed considerably. In recent years the city has been transformed by world-class developments in places like Laganside, Cathedral Quarter and in the city centre. The mighty £100 million Odyssey complex which attracts thousands of Belfast Giant's ice hockey fans and major entertainment acts; the Waterfront Hall; new galleries; retailing centres; new public and private developments are all part of the transformation and must be seen to be believed.

The consistent increase in the numbers of students from overseas coming to study in the "Land of Saints and Scholars" over the last decade reflects the fact that Northern Ireland offers the perfect opportunity to enjoy a novel mix of high educational standards combined with an exciting cultural experience.

As a Gateway to Europe, this modern, English speaking country, whose vibrant Celtic origin continues to regulate the pulse of the nation, offers a truly rewarding experience for the visiting students.
