Accessing Support

How to access support?
The student needs to first complete a Learning Support Referral form (LS1). They can then access a wide range of support. This support is based on the completion of an assessment, and may require medical evidence or prior assessment evidence. The form of assessment will depend on which funding mechanism the student is accessing, Additional Support Fund (ASF) or Disabled Student Allowance (DSA)

Examples of support:

  • Provide enabling technology e.g. hearing and magnification aids, enabling computer software.

  • Provide course resources in alternative formats e.g. large print, Braille, audio tape or DAISY format.

  • Provide specialist advice on how particular disabilities impact on learning.

  • Provide support workers e.g. note takers, communication support workers, sign language interpreters.

  • Negotiate appropriate support packages for students who require specialist care.

  • Assess for special examination arrangements and liaise with examination officers on providing support requirements.

  • Negotiate support tutorials with subject specialist.

  • Negotiate non subject specific learning mentor.

  • Advise on current policy and legislation.

  • Liaise with external statutory/voluntary support agencies.
