This three year intensive higher education course enables you to develop awareness of the media industry, learn the technical skills required to work as a specialist hair and makeup artist and build a professional portfolio. You will have practical sessions and theory through business and production management. The course focuses on working in the media industries of fashion and live performance, including aspects of the film and television industry. You will study current trends makeup and editorial hair, character theatre makeup, body painting and special effects. You will develop specialist hair and makeup skills whilst building a professional portfolio. This is a vocational study programme with an emphasis on practical learning in hair and makeup.Course content is regularly reviewed to reflect changes in the industry. You will study units such as:
Creative Arts Professional Practice, Creative Arts Research Skills, Mask Design and Construction, Design Exploration for Makeup in Performance Arts, Contextual and Cultural Referencing in Art and Design, Historical Context in the performing arts, Period Hair, Makeup and Wig Dressing, Managing a creative business. TV and Film Hair and Makeup, Current Trends in Hair and Makeup, Preparation, Process and Production in the Creative Arts, Costume Design Concept, Design Techniques and Applications for the Performer, Production Management in the Creative ArtsThis programme of study is likely to include enrichment units which are an additional component to enhance your employability.

Make-up artist opportunities exist in a variety of contexts, including: beauty salons, independent/ self-employed/mobile/home-based settings, theatre, film, television, print media, photographic studios; National Health Service, product manufacturing and training.
Requirements are pre-defined by the College’s admissions criteria which are outlined at the beginning of this document. You will be required to buy a Belfast Met uniform (cost £36.00) and kit (cost £175.00) – specific details will be given at pre-entry advice and guidance sessions. Applicants must have completed the Level 3 Diploma in Fashion, Theatre and Media Hair and Makeup studies or equivalent.
