Yoga is an ancient Indian practice using physical postures to obtain a harmony of mind, body and spirit. It is not a religion, but the discipline of breathing and concentration during practice will bring tranquility and awareness to the mind. Whilstyoga is now taking many different forms, regular practice of any may bring about benefits, which include:
• Increased oxygenation of the blood;
• Muscle toning throughout the body;
• a clearer and more relaxed mind;
• improved posture;
• improved circulation of blood and lymph;
• regulation of bodily functions.

Yoga is a discipline for self improvement. Most yoga classes can be practiced by persons irrespective of age or ability. By understanding the yoga practices correctly students can improve their general health with no ill effects. The yoga practices will include, stretching, gentle movement, breathing techniques, relaxation and visualization.

A range of yoga classes are available to suit beginners and those with some experience. Different styles of yoga are catered for including Iyenga, Astanga, Meditation, Yoga Strength and Relaxation.
Iyengar yoga is the most widely practiced form of yoga in the Western world. It is based on the teachings of yoga master BKS Iyengar. Classes include yoga postures, simple breathing techniques and relaxation. The emphasis is on correct body alignment, use of props making it suitable for all levels and a clear, structured teaching method.

This course is now full and may be offered again in the near future.

Career Opportunities / Progression

Students may develop an interest in other therapies which promote health and wellbeing. Students can progress to FE courses in Massage, Reflexology, Aromatherapy and Tai Chi. These courses can lead to employment in the field of complimentary therapies.

Entry Requirements

Beginners - No experience required.

Continuation - Previous experience of yoga.

Iyengar - Suitable for all ages and all abilities from beginner to experienced student.

Students need to disclose any medical conditions, illness or injury tothe tutor.
