What does this qualification cover?
The content of this qualification is made up of the required subjects to be a sports massage therapist. This includes anatomy and physiology, professional practice, an understanding of the principles of health and fitness and how to provide sports massage treatments. The level 3 sports massage therapist will be able to work safely in a range of contexts, ie pre-event, post-event, intra-event and for maintenance purposes.
The structure of the qualification is comprised of 5 units which are all mandatory.
- Anatomy and physiology for sports massage
- Principles of health and fitness
- Understand the principles of soft tissue dysfunction
- Professional practice in sports massage
- Sports massage treatments
All students are required to attend external sporting events outside of the scheduled College timetable, eg attending and working at the Belfast Marathon and there are also four external events to attend.
All students must be prepared to purchase a uniform costing approximately £25, recommended course text books, and are encouraged to purchase a portable sports massage couch (approximately £100).
5 GCSE’s Grade C or above (or equivalent)
Students must register with Sports Massage Association (SMA) whilst on the course (approximately £25).
All fees are set in accordance with DfE regulations.
What qualification could this lead to?
Students who successfully complete this qualification may be able to gain employment and obtain insurance to work as a Sports Massage Therapist.
