This course is intended to provide the underpinning knowledge, understanding and skills for those with a role in directly working with children or young people in schools.
It is a 1 year course which is delivered 2 evenings per week and students mustwork or be in placement in a school.
Students will study a number of Mandatory units plus one set of options as below.
There are 3 Option Pathways:
Option 1 (for general Primary School work)
• Unit 310 Plan and deliver learning activities under the direction of a teacher
• Unit 311 Support literacy development
• Unit 312 Support numeracy development
• Unit 313 Support teaching and learning in a curriculum area
Option 2 (useful for post primary)
• Unit 314 Support delivery of the 14-19 curriculum
• Unit 315 Provide literacy and numeracy support
Plus a minimum of 6 credits from other option groups or from a wider selection by agreement with the assessor and the school

Option 3 (for Special Educational Needs)
• Unit 319 Support disabled children and young people and those with special educational needs
Plus 2 from the following or 1 combined with 1 from wider selection by agreement with the assessor and the school
• Unit 320 Support children and young people with behaviour, emotional and social development needs
• Unit 321 Support learners with cognition and learning needs
• Unit 322 Support learners with communication and interaction needs
• Unit 323 Support learners with sensory and/or physical needs

Wider selection includes:
• Unit 317 Support bilingual learners
• Unit 325 Lead an extra-curricular activity
• Unit 339 Provide information and advise to young people
• Unit 342 Facilitate the learning and development of children and young people through mentoring
• Unit 343 Promote the well-being and resilience of children and young people

Career Opportunities / Progression

Progression Route:
Previous students have used this qualification to enhance their applications for Higher Education qualifications such as BA Early Years, Bed or PGCE if they already hold essential qualifications.

Entry Requirements

You must:
• Be employed in a school setting or be able to attend a substantial placement ---each in a classroom setting
• Have good communication skills
• Show evidence of having the ability to study at this level
• Preference may be given to those who hold GCSE English and Maths at Grade C or above, or qualifications deemed to be equivalent
• Experience of working in a classroom is desirable
• If the course is oversubscribed a tariff system may be applied
The offer of a place on this course will be conditional upon satisfactory completion of an ACCESS NI Criminal Records check.

Assessment Method:
Your theoretical knowledge will be assessed through work plans, reflective journals, case studies, short assignments or question papers.
Your practical competence and the records of your practice will be assessed in the workplace by a visiting assessor.
