The one year full-time Access Diploma in Foundation Studies (Biological/Biomedical Sciences) provides an alternative route for mature students wishing to apply for entry to higher education. It is a Level 3 qualification awarded by Queen’s University Belfast and is recognised by other UK higher education institutions for entry to undergraduate courses. This course is designed to attract students who wish to undertake a degree course in pure Biological Sciences or work in the Bioscience industry or pursue a career in one of the health-related professions.

The course consists of Six Modules:
C3076 101F:   Study skills , Chemistry 1,Chemistry 2, Biology 1, Biology 2 , Physics
C3076 102F & 103F:  Study skills Chemistry 1, Microbiology, Biology 1, Biology 2, *1 Optional Unit
*Optional unit choice will depend on entry qualifications and desired progression route.  Optional Units may include NICATS Maths, Physics, Chemistry 2, and Psychology
This programme of study is likely to include enrichment units which are an additional component to enhance your employability.

Assessment - Most modules are assessed through a combination of Coursework Assignments and Exam with the exception of Study Skills which is assessed through a “Learning Journal”.

Career Opportunities / Progression

Successful students have, in the past, progressed to study for degrees as diverse as Biology, Chemistry, Biomedical Science, Dietetics, Microbiology, Archaeology, Physiotherapy, Radiotherapy, Pharmacology, Zoology, Physiotherapy, Clinical Physiology, Teaching, Nursing and Occupational therapy. Students who successfully complete the course may also progress to further and higher courses with n Belfast Met including HND and Foundation Degree programmes.

Entry Requirements

College regulations stipulate that all students must be 16 or over on 1st July 2017 and meet the following criteria.

  • Must have been out of full time education from at least June 2015

  • Grade C in GCSE English (or equivalent literacy qualification) and Grade C in GCSE Maths (or equivalent numeracy qualification) and a pass in a Level 2 Science related qualification
