The Access Diploma in Foundation Studies is a one year Level 3 (A Level equivalent) course, which is an alternative route for students who have been away from full-time education for at least two full consecutive academic years to gain entry to a wide range of higher education courses. The Diploma is awarded by Queen’s University Belfast and is recognised by other higher education institutions for entry to undergraduate courses. Students who successfully complete the course may also progress to further and higher courses within Belfast Met, including HND and Foundation Degree programmes.
The course consists of six modules. You will undertake two modules in each of your main subjects plus Study Skills and one other module from a choice determined by the college.

This programme of study is likely to include enrichment units which are an additional component to enhance your employability.

Career Opportunities / Progression

Successful students have, in the past, progressed to study for degrees, HNDs or Foundation Degrees in areas such as; History, Politics, Psychology, Sociology, English, Law, Social Work and teaching.

Entry Requirements

College regulations stipulate that all students must be 16 or over on 1st July 2017 and meet the following criteria.

Applicants for the full-time course must have been out of full-time education for at least two full consecutive academic years and hold at least grade C GCSE English AND grade C GCSE Maths or equivalent Numeracy qualification. 

Applicants for the part-time course must have been out of full-time education for at least 2 full consecutive academic years and hold at least grade C in GCSE English or equivalent Literacy qualification. 

Please note that this is an intensive and challenging course which requires a high level of commitment to achieve success. Students who feel they cannot make this level of commitment should consider the part-time option which is run over two years and may be more suitable for those returning to study after an extended break.

Other Information

Full-time students must be able to attend at least 18 hours of classes per week and part-time 9.5 hours per week.
