This is an Intermediate level (Level 1) course in ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages). There are 2 types of ESOL Speaking and Listening Level 1 courses: Intensive (14 hours per week for 4 weeks) and part-time (3.5 – 4 hours per week for 10 weeks).
The aim of this unit is to develop the learner’s speaking and listening skills to enable them to obtain and convey information in a range of contexts.
This general ESOL course offers the ESOL City & Guilds Skills for Life Speaking & Listening mode at Level 1. The learning outcomes of this course are mapped to the National Standards for Adult Literacy and the assessment criteria are mapped to the Adult ESOL Core Curriculum for Speaking & Listening at level 1.
This course will help you to:
• Listen for and identify relevant information from explanations and presentations on a range of straightforward topics
• Listen for and understand explanations, instructions and narratives on different topics in a arrange of contexts
• Use strategies to clarify and confirm understanding e.g. facial features, body language and verbal prompts
• Provide feedback and confirmation when listening to others
• Make contributions relevant to the situation and the subject
• Speak clearly in a way which suits the situation
• Make requests and ask questions to obtain information in familiar and unfamiliar contexts
• Respond to questions on a range of topics
• Express clearly statements of fact, explanations, instructions, accounts and descriptions
• Present information and ideas in a logical sequence and include detail and develop ideas where appropriate
• Follow and contribute to discussions on a range of straightforward topics
• Respect the turn-taking rights of others of during discussions
• Use appropriate phrases for interruption

Intermediate topics include: education & training, finding a job, communication at work, the environment, housing, travel & transport, me and my health, information technology, family and friends, me and my community, the media, UK society.
We will also study vocabulary and grammar at Level 1 related to task types, topics and exam past papers.
We have a maximum of 20 students in ESOL classes.
Your teacher may recommend a textbook for further study but materials will be provided in class.

An assessment is required for application to this course.

Career Opportunities / Progression

This course will help you to progress through our ESOL courses. The course after Speaking and Listening Level 1 is Speaking and Listening Level 2. Please talk to your teacher at the end of the course to discuss the best progression route for you.

Entry Requirements

You must be at least 16 years old to study ESOL at Belfast Metropolitan College.
All students must be assessed before the start of the course. Our teachers will give you a short test to check your level of English and then we will advise you on the best course to suit your needs. If you have certificates from a previous ESOL course, you may not need to take the test but you must bring your certificates with you to the assessment session.
You must also bring photographic ID, such as a valid passport or national identity card to the assessment session.
