This is an Intermediate level (Level 1) course in ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages). There are 2 types of ESOL Writing Level 1 courses: Intensive (14 hours per week for 5 weeks) and part-time (3.5 – 4 hours per week for 10 weeks).
The aim of this unit is to develop the learner’s writing skills to enable them to organise and produce accurate text appropriate to the intended audience.
This general ESOL course offers the ESOL City & Guilds Skills for Life Writing mode at Level 1. Thelearning outcomes of this course are mapped to the National Standards for Adult Literacy and the assessment criteria are mapped to the Adult ESOL Core Curriculum for Writing at level 1.
This course will help you to:
• Plan and draft writing
• Judge how much to write and the level of detail to include
• Present information in a logical sequence using paragraphs where appropriate
• Use language suitable for purpose and audience
• Use format and structure for different purposes
• Write in complete sentences
• Punctuate sentences correctly and use punctuation so that meaning is clear
• Spell correctly words used most often in work, studies and daily life
• Proof-read and revise writing for accuracy and meaning
• Produce legible text

Intermediate topics include: education & training, finding a job, communication at work, the environment, housing, travel & transport, me and my health, information technology, family and friends, me and my community, the media, UK society.
We will also study vocabulary and grammar at Level 1 related to task types, topics and exam past papers.
We have a maximum of 20 students in ESOL classes.
Your teacher may recommend a textbook for further study but materials will be provided in class.

An assessment is required for application to this course.

Career Opportunities / Progression

This course will help you to progress through our ESOL courses. The course after Writing Level 1 is Writing Level 2. Please talk to your teacher at the end of the course to discuss the best progression route for you.

Entry Requirements

You must be at least 16 years old to study ESOL at Belfast Metropolitan College.
All students must be assessed before the start of the course. Our teachers will give you a short test to check your level of English and then we will advise you on the best course to suit your needs. If you have certificates from a previous ESOL course, you may not need to take the test but you must bring your certificates with you to the assessment session.
You must also bring photographic ID, such as a valid passport or national identity card to the assessment session.
