This is a Pre-Intermediate level (Entry 3) course in ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages). There are 2 types of ESOL Speaking and Listening Entry 3 courses: Intensive (14 hours per week for 5 weeks) and part-time (5 hours per week for 10 weeks). This general ESOL course offers the ESOL City & Guilds Skills for Life Speaking and Listening mode at Entry 3. The learning outcomes of this course are mapped to the National Standards for Adult Literacy and the assessment criteria are mapped tothe Adult ESOL Core Curriculum for Speaking and Listening at Entry 3.

This course will help you to:
• listen for and follow the gist of straightforward explanations, instructions & narratives
• listen for detail in explanations, instructions and narratives in different contexts
• listen for and identify relevant information and new information from discussions,
explanations & presentations
• use strategies to clarify and confirm understanding eg facial expressions or gestures
• listen to and respond appropriately to other points of view
• speak clearly to be heard and understood, using appropriate clarity, speed and phrasing
• use formal language and register when appropriate
• respond to a range of questions about familiar topics
• express clearly statements of fact and give short explanations, accounts and descriptions
• make requests and ask questions to obtain information in familiar and unfamiliar contexts
• follow and understand the main points of discussions on different topics
• make contributions to discussions that are relevant to the subject
• respect the turn-taking rights of others during discussions

Pre- Intermediate topics include: Me and my home, me and my health, health andsafety, me and my community, communication at work, travel and transport and finding a job.
We will also study vocabulary and grammar at Entry 3 related to task types, topics and exam past papers.

An assessment is required for application to this course.

Career Opportunities / Progression

This course will help you to progress through our ESOL courses. The course after Speaking and Listening Entry 3 is Speaking and Listening Level 1.
Please talk to your teacher at the end of the course to discuss the best progression route for you.

Entry Requirements

You must be at least 16 years old to study ESOL at Belfast Metropolitan College. All students must be assessed before the start of the course. Our teachers will give you a short test to check your level of English and then we will advise you on the best course to suit your needs. If you have certificates from a previous ESOL course, you may not need to take the test but you must bring your certificates with you to the assessment session.
You must also bring photographic ID, such as a valid passport or national identity card to the assessment session.
